Pascal Pierme

Pascal Pierme was born in St. Raphael, France. He lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Pierme creates minimalist sculptures out of multiple mediums that help him work out puzzles related to balance, movement, inquiry, architecture and nature.

The artist cites his grandfather with his fragrant woodshop as an early inspiration. Through him he learned how to be one hundred percent responsible for creating something from A-Z. Pierme studied Art History and Technique in St. Raphael, France and the Airgraph Technique in San Diego, California. He has participated in hundreds of exhibitions throughout the United States, France and Switzerland.

His work has been commissioned privately by the likes of Pierre Cardin, Carol Burnett, Marriott Hotels and the Equifax World Headquarters among others. Pierme is interested in assimilating what is not supposed to fit—the combination of contrasting elements through a metaphorical chemistry. He composes elements into a moment and “freezes” it, therefore capturing a split second of evolution.

Words from the artist

“I am an explorer at heart, more in search of questions than answers. In my work, I try not to conclude or explain anything. Thus, the title of a piece merely serves as a portal of entry for the imagination, and I invite the viewer to step through and take a journey of discovery with me. That artist/viewer dynamic- having the spectator in on the search - is very exciting to me. For me, the onset of a new sculpture begins with a fresh desire to create. I approach this space as if I were a novice, and I try to forget everything I have done before. I begin by waiting in that still, fertile, now place for something to emerge from nothing. Eventually, something will spark a potentiality to life - a startled bird’s fluttering wings, a strain of music, the tail end of a recent dream floating by - any number of stimuli might germinate an idea. It is a joyful, exultant moment. And then, the adventure begins. As with many adventures, the beginning may seem chaotic,
Sometime I feel as if my brain is a giant vortex, drawing in a multitude of creative sparks: my admiration for a particular contemporary building, the unique color of a fruit skin, a morning frost on desert grass, the clouds’ movement in the sky, a feeling of openness, insecurity in a surprising sound, an old piece of fabric that challenges my memory, an intense conversation with a stranger and of course doubt, love, anger, desire, and ego. While at first the ideas may seem incompatible, the energetics that are at play - balance, movement, and hidden interconnections – begin to gravitate toward a coherent and integrated form.  I am always interested in assimilating what is not supposed to fit, the combining of contrasting elements, and over time this has emerged as a recurring theme in my work. As I explore this assimilation, much like a scientist, I become engrossed with the research and development aspects of a project, especially when it comes to exploring the various finishing mediums. I work hard to distill my work to its purest form, to arrive at its essence, and to ultimately recognize its true stopping point. That is the most difficult challenge for me, as it is with many artists. Ultimately. every phase in my work reflects a prominent steppingstone in my own inner growth. Like any life-long companion, my work and I have reached a comfortable, reliable familiarity with each other. That surety of presence brings a confident, expanding freedom to the relationship, keeping me engaged and intrigued. And so, the adventure continues.”

Biography

Pascal Pierme was born in St. Raphael, France.

Pascal Pierme is a Frenchman who settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico USA in 1997 after gaining a European reputation as a promising young sculptor. He accomplished several solo exhibitions in France and Switzerland, and worked on collaborative projects alongside creative giants such as Pierre Cardin. Pierme cites his Grandfather – an exceptional woodworker, as well as a painter – as an early inspiration. “The idea to be 100% responsible for creating something from A to Z amazed me.” Pierme recalls. “The scent of his studio was also a big attraction. The fragrance of multiple woods combined with turpentine and linseed oil created a magical space.”

Pierme himself has since become known as a master of medium. However, if asked what he values in art, he will reply, “THE IDEA. That is it.” Though teasingly nicknamed “Picasso” at a very early age, due to rampant creativity, Pierme has never been comfortable identifying himself an artist. That is for others to decide. He is, however, aware that he has prolific creative tendencies. He is a man who does not “feel good” unless he is making.
